Seven months in, policy on transgender people in jails well received

It hasn’t been used often, but a policy that outlines how staff at Saskatchewan jails should interact with transgender people has proven useful, says a spokesman for the province’s justice ministry.
“Staff operate very well in an environment when they understand what to do when potentially something that’s uncertain for them presents itself,” Drew Wilby said.
“Part of our job in corrections is to ensure that we’re prepared when things do come into our facilities. We haven’t had significant experience with transgender individuals … And so we need to prepare for when we require these things, and having policy in place for that is very, very important.”
The provincial government put policies in place in late June 2016 outlining how transgender people should be admitted to correctional centres.
The policies say transgender people are to be placed in facilities that correspond to their self-identified genders unless there are overriding health and safety concerns that can’t be resolved…

Province commits $137,000 to Shore Gold diamond mine consultations

The provincial government’s decision to commit $137,000 to fund consultations with a Saskatchewan First Nation means Shore Gold Inc. is one step away from learning whether its proposed Star-Orion-South diamond mine east of Prince Albert can proceed as planned.
The talks between the Ministry of Environment and James Smith Cree Nation are expected to take about six months and concentrate on issues related to land access for traditional activities like hunting and fishing, according to a government spokesman.
“Once consultations with James Smith Cree Nation are deemed adequate, then the minister will evaluate all pertinent information before rendering a decision,” said Brady Pollock, applications manager in the ministry’s environmental assessment and stewardship division.
Pollock said the government decided to undertake the latest round of consultations after a public review process completed two years ago raised “issues that had not been addressed.” The talks are part of its legal ..

Pair attempted to hide in nearby basement after fleeing hospital following collision, say RCMP

A 28-year-old woman is facing multiple charges, including obstructing justice and driving with undue care and attention, after a two-vehicle collision near Rosetown.
According to RCMP in a news release, members of the Rosetown detachment responded to a head-on collision between a semi truck-trailer unit and an SUV approximately 10 kilometres east of Rosetown on Highway 7. After the three occupants of the SUV were transported to Rosetown Hospital, two of them — one man and one woman — “fled on foot and attempted to hide in the basement of a local business,” RCMP said.
The two were quickly located by RCMP and arrested without incident.
The man found in the nearby building, along with the other man who was in the SUV, were both transported to a hospital in Saskatoon for further assessment. The 28-year-old woman from Saskatoon and the driver of the semi were not injured.

It seems 2017 is the year of the sheared, layered chop—at least in the world of Hailey Baldwin. The model took to Instagram to share what looks to be a new cut and freshly snipped bangs, the straight style doubling as a study in geometry. Rather than opting for a blunt length or full-fringe look, Baldwin’s blanched, shoulder-skimming lengths center on angles and lines, with shorter strands framing her cheekbones to highlight-worthy effect. Based on the caption, the new chop likely has roots in Baldwin’s younger years, but one thing is certain: The updated rendition is anything but retro.

Why Neon Is Having a Moment in Home Decor (And Everywhere Else)

Neon is clearly having a moment. You can thank, in part, La La Land, a film that washes Los Angeles in a cool Technicolor glow.
Beyond its seductive qualities, the artistry and skill required to create neon works—the bending of tubes by hand into sinuous letters and forms—are also experiencing a resurgent appreciation.
“I became enamored and obsessed with the way these signs are designed and handmade,” explains Tanja Tiziana, a Toronto-based photographer whose recently released book, Buzzing Lights: The Fading Neon Landscape of North America, documents vintage signs across the United States and Canada. “I was drawn to their cool designs and retro aesthetic.”
If you, too, find yourself enamored with neon, here’s a look at some ways to get turned on by the quintessential gas-and-glass combination right now. And in case you can’t get enough, we’ve also included a few ways to work the glow into your home in the slideshow.

How to Live Longer in 5 Easy Steps

What’s the secret to a longer life? For that, there’s a promising new body of scientific research that youth-seekers will find compelling. Here, five easy habits that might extend your lifespan—worth exploring.
Go Vegan(-ish)
Last summer, a group of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital researchers revealed the hidden virtues of plant protein. After tracking more than 131,000 patients for up to 32 years, the study found that swapping out processed red meat (sausage, bacon) for plant versions (beans, nuts, legumes) was linked to a lower mortality rate. The authors suggest that people should consider eating more plant proteins than animal proteins. Research fellow Mingyang Song added that fish and chicken are likely better choices than red and processed meat.
Add Spice
A recent study from the University of Vermont found that hot red chili peppers were linked to a 13 percent decrease in mortality, largely from heart disease or stroke. The data tracked well with earlie..

Is Bella Hadid Borrowing From Gigi’s Closet?

Shared, borrowed, or stolen—swapping clothes between sisters is all part of the territory. Kendall and Kylie Jenner admit to regularly supplementing their own closets with items sourced from the other, and now another pair of siblings is continuing the trend. Models Gigi and Bella Hadid were spotted en route to Sunday brunch over the weekend, with Bella in what appeared to be a pair of button-fly trousers we saw on Gigi just days prior. When the sisters headed to lunch together today in New York, Bella wore what looked just like the leopard-print coat first spotted on her big sister.
While Gigi went the rock star route, pairing hers with shredded black denim, Bella opted for a more modern take in Blank NYC leather pants with intricate embroidery. A Supreme Box Logo hoodie was also of-the-moment—the cult streetwear brand just announced a collaboration with Louis Vuitton at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. With Stuart Weitzman stretch-velvet boots on her feet and a Givenchy bowler bag in ha..

Watch Rihanna Make Her TV Debut in a Hitchcock-Worthy Cameo

Photo: Courtesy of American Genre Film Archive
Rihanna’s transition to Hollywood continues. On Tuesday, Entertainment Weekly released two exclusive images of the pop singer in her first-ever TV role in A&E’s horror series, Bates Motel. (The show, which explores the early life of Alfred Hitchcock’s crazed murderer, Norman Bates, was apparently a favorite of RiRi’s.) Last summer, Rihanna was cast as the doomed Marion Crane—aka the woman who meets her fate behind a shower curtain—for the show’s fifth and final season. The original role in the 1960 thriller, Psycho, launched actress Janet Leigh into worldwide fame, and her murder scene is still one of the most iconic moments in film history. So who better than the one and only Bad Gal RiRi to make the part into her own?
Below, a first look of Rihanna as Marion Crane in the trailer of the new season of Bates Motel.

Yeezy Season 5 Is Coming to New York Fashion Week

After a much buzzed-about (in ways both good and bad) Season 4 show on Roosevelt Island, Kanye West’s Yeezy collection is returning to New York Fashion Week this February for its Season 5 iteration. According to a press blast, Yeezy will show on Wednesday, February 15, at 5:00 p.m., a slot between Anna Sui and Thom Browne, currently also occupied by Marchesa.
Unlike past seasons, where West took over Madison Square Garden and the bottom half of Roosevelt Island, this season’s show is slated to take place at Pier 59 Studios at Chelsea Piers. That venue, which provides designers a studio format they can rework into a presentation or a runway show, is much more familiar to the fashion set—and much easier to access.
As for the collection, West and Kim Kardashian West have been teasing Calabasas-branded merchandise on social media for nearly a year, leading fans to believe a release of the city merch is imminent. If the Wests’ new Instagram style is anything to go by, the suburban ’90s vi..
